As I begin to enter my senior year of college at Mississippi State University, I am able to look back and reflect on some of the things that were able to help get me through my darkest moments in college while battling anxiety and depression. Leaving your family behind and preparing to start your new adventure can be stressful, heartbreaking, and exciting all at the same time, but it does not have to been when you have helpful tips and guidance from others who have been where you are going, so I produced five helpful heartful tips to make the college experience a little better to transition to.
GET PLUGGED IN
One of the best things I decided to do in college was get involved on campus and join different organizations! As you get to know your university a little better you get a wide range of opportunities that can get you connected to that make college more fun! You get to meet a lot of people from all over the world and meet your future best friends in student organizations. I have gotten a chance to be part of serval organizations at MSU like New Maroon Camp, Dance Marathon, and brick-fire, which are all student lead organizations that helped me get adjusted to campus. Greek life is also something that I was able to get involved in my first year of college and got a chance to meet my best friend in my pledge class.
BECOME CLOSE WITH YOUR PROFESSOR
I have found that sitting in the front of your class while also interacting with your professor can make a significant difference in the way you perform in the class. This was something that I was not told entering my first year of college and had learned on my own but found it greatly beneficial. Making that close connection with your professors is so important in college and can help you out in the end when you need that extra one or two points at the end of the semester to go from a B to an A.
FIND AN OUTLET
Growing up people always tell you how hard and stressful college is, but they never tell you any healthy ways to cope with all the stress college brings upon you. Some healthy ways to deal with stress in college that I do are taking walks, taking some time away from social media, listening to my favorite genre of music, hanging out with a close friend, and going to the school gym to release any built-up stress. These are things I have been doing since my first year, and they have gotten me through all my tough times.
CALL YOUR PARENTS
It is so important to call home and check on your parents when the opportunity arrives to you! There is never not an enough time in the day to call and talk with your parents wherever it be when you are walking in between classes, on the way to the on-campus dining hall, or even when a class is over, and you are headed back to the dorm/apartment call your parents! I found it very comforting to talk with my mom when I got the chance to, and it relieves lots of built-up anxiety. Your parents are going to miss you and you are going to miss them too, so give them a call!
CREATE NEW STUDY HABITATS
I hate to break it to you, but you are going to have to change if not most all your study habits! After taking my first few tests in college and studying the way I did in high school, I realized that something had to change. The best advice I can give to an incoming freshman is make sure you study new material as soon as it comes out, use flashcards, highlight, and study with your peers. Studying with people in college is so important because everyone in the class wants an A and will be trying their best to do a good job with studying.
